Good run

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 8:42 am

Kara run last night. Went well, cialis 40mg getting to be a habit. This Munqui Tribe Kara group is getting pretty good. Last night we downed 6 bosses fairly ploughing through the first ones with only one wipe and that was on Illhoof. As I’ve already said we’re getting to be a good group, it’s nice! There’s a follow up run tonight that, unfortunately, I really can’t make.

Flowersz got enough badges to get new boots replacing her crappy AH greens, and an upgrade to her bracers changing from spirit cloth to mana mail. Thanks to the advice from PlusHeal she didn’t die once on the pre-Curator trash, which is a real relief – I was beginning to dread this part of the raid. Obviously positioning isn’t the whole solution, I definitely saw a taunt go down.

The group was good, I know I’ve said that before. So good that instead of saving my re-incarnate for wipe recovery I used it twice during the night to pop-back up and continue the fight. I’ll not kid myself, there’s a fair chance that we could have won those fights anyway, and then again who can say what might have been. Special thanks to Shirtish who dropped an Innervate on me post-reincarnate which really got me back into the fight good and proper.

I only did a couple of stupid things last night, and they’re getting more minor, the worst was asking for a rezz when I was dead just inside the entrance. Another was popping a Heroism instead of Water Shield as the trash mob bit the dust. And a final one was dropping an agility totem for the bear tank when he wasn’t in my group, fortunately just on trash! Roll on WotLK when totems become raid wide.

I’ve installed GotWood which displays “candy bars” for my totems. This is placed besides the Healbot bars so it sits inside my field of view. This is definitely better, but I still occasionally missed the totems expiring, particularly on the more intense fights. Really got to work on the audible notifier.

Maybe I’m just feeling a little self-satisfied, or not really paying enough attention, but the good points:

  • I’m checking to see if the chain-heals are bouncing, and if not reverting to LHW/HW for that player.
  • I’m downranking HW more often.
  • I’m popping heroism without prompting, usually before the Raid Leader asks, but still at appropriate moments (I’d like to think).
  • On Illhoof I was mentally ready to drop the Fire Elemental just when the RL asked for it.
  • I think I even dropped an Earth Elemental once, yeah he’s just a target dummy but every little helps and if I don’t use him at all then why bother having the spell keyed up?
  • Second equal on the healing meter, though the top healer is slaughtering Flowersz – (22% vs 38%).
  • Earth Shield up nearly permanently – 20% of Flowersz healing is coming from this!

So So points:

  • I’m getting a little more situational aware, though looking up from my healbot so I can avoid cyclones etc is still a problem for me.

The bad points:

  • Overhealing, this is getting uncomfortably big.
  • Mana conservation, I’m still running out on the really long fights, see above.
  • Getting better at trinket use, but not good enough. I’ve got my head around using the mana trinket, but not the healing trinket. Mana is easy, as soon as I see I’m down a bit then I pop it, but when to use the +healing? Maybe the overhealing and mana issues are pointing me at the Seaspray Albatross JC trinket?

New shoes

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 7:53 am

Flowersz got enough badges last night (11 badges) to buy some new shiney shoes – Treads of the Life Path. Of her normal armour Flowersz’ boots were the pits, somnology some AH greens. So her next epic wasn’t a JC trinket as blogged about in the last post. Once they’re gemmed Flowersz should hit +1300 heal unbuffed.

Now Flowersz really needs to focus on getting some enchantments or make that trinket. Either will last her some time, so it’s going to be a case of evaluating “bang per buck”

The Kara run is in the next post.

My next epic?

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:36 pm

I hit revered with the Shattered Sun Offensive this weekend, resuscitation a side effect of running lots of the Daily quests to get more money. This has opened up the possibility of creating a new epic trinket Figurine – Seaspray Albatross. Which grants 18 mp5 on equip and 900 mana on use (3minute cooldown). Now it needs two Seaspray Emeralds, more about 8 primal mana and some eterniunm bars. Seaspray emeralds are epic gems which drop in a dungeon well out of my reach. But the gods are similing on me because this weekend I got one from my “Brilliant Glass” at around a 1% chance that’s saved me about 250 gold!. So all I need now is to spend about 330gold more (4 more primal mana – around 80 gold and another Seaspray Emerald – 250 gold) and I can craft my own epic trinket.

Shall I make it? Or should I try to buy an enchant instead. Oh, I do so love spending money!

According to this incredible chart on “gear longevity” resto shaman are using this trinket until their +heal is over 2000, my +heal is currently at about +1200 so as a trinket goes several players think it’s pretty damn good! Unfortunately it doesn’t give any +heal.

Playing with my other epic trinket, Pendant of the Violet Eye, I can bash out about 10 Healing Wave (Rank 1) before the effect dissapears. (20 second lifespan) each spell grants 21 mp5. So taking the pessimistic attitude that it only grants on 5 second boundaries….

  • 0. HW
  • 2. HW
  • 4. HW
  • 5. proc = 3*21 = 63mana
  • 6. HW
  • 8. HW
  • 10. HW
  • 10. proc = 6*21 = 126 mana
  • 12. HW
  • 14. HW
  • 16. HW
  • 18. HW
  • 20. proc = 10*21 = 210 mana

Total mana regained = 399 mana

Total mana spent = 10*25? less a little for talents = 210 mana.

Gain: 189 mana.

So just bashing this trinket for it’s proc and not actually bothering to heal anything will give me around 200 mana. That doesn’t seem like a lot at all :(.

I’ll be doing some more testing of this trinket to change these values from “guesstimates” to “actuals”. At the moment it looks like it will provide some “side-effect” benefit while casting normal heals rather than being a cool trinket that can be used to restore a whole bunch of mana in an emergency.

How could I not post?

Yet another Kara progression post, vitamin sorry guys. (I’ll fill in the links later)

Some serious Loot dropped for Flowersz last night, although I didn’t do a lot of celebrating in the raid chat I am in fact pretty excited with Flowersz new gear. She got new shoulders so instead of wearing Forest Wind Shoulderpads, healing leather with some spirit, she is now wearing a pair of cool looking Dragon Quake Shoulderguards. Not that the black smoke look wasn’t pretty mean, but a pair of Dragon heads mounted on her shoulders is pretty cool, and it has more shaman specific itemization. I had a small feeling that I might get new shoulders soon since I had literally minutes before the raid started just put an Inscription of Faith on her old shoulders, spending money on enchants is a surefire way of making sure you get an upgrade. Ive already dumped a Greater Inscription of Faith on these new shoulders.

But, shoulders aside, the best drop came from Chess, Flowersz finally got a replacement for her somewhat worn Seer’s Ringmail Legguards, I’ve only recently decided that I needed to run Heroic Slave Pens to get an upgrade to these and before I even try once now Flowersz gets a pair of Heart Flame Leggings! And they come with sockets (2 blues and a Yellow)! So, instead of collecting the mats for Silver Spellthread (~120g) I’ve got to grind to get Golden Spellthread (~300g) and at three, at least rare quality, gems. I’ve not looked forwards to grinding this much for some time!

On the raid itself…

It was a good raid, despite wiping once on a few bosses, we were marching through the place quite quickly. Our DPS and tank seemed pretty damn good, if the raid leader said “kill the summoned add” you could be pretty confident it would be dead in short order. So, we downed Curator, Maiden, Illhoof, Arran, Chess, and Prince – 13 badges from one run. Illhoof and Prince were new bosses to Flowersz.

Arran was a disappointment for Flowersz, after dying early on to blizzard she was battle rezzed and then almost immediately got trapped by her own Sentry Totem and died again. So the party downed him on only two healers, fantastic (for them). Sentry totem is now being pulled from my list of available totems, I’ve never ever used it intentionally and I nearly always die when I accidentally drop it. I don’t use it and I don’t want it!

Flowersz once again consistently died in the trash pulls up to Curator. I’m really beginning to dislike this part of kara. Time to invest in a subtlety enchant (~350g) if only I could afford it!

As for Flowersz healing “ranking”, she is still usually propping up the other two healers, though I think the gap is closing as both her gear, and more importantly my playing, improves. I really can’t thank the Munqui Tribe enough for putting up with my noob mistakes, currently running at about one a night!

Healing percentages pulled from the WWS logs:

Maiden: 27/23/23

Curator: 39/25/20

Illhoof: 36/31/17

Arran: 40/30/Dead

Prince: 31/28/22

In defense of the low percentages Flowersz is now throttling back on the tank heals when it looks like the others have it under control, this does mean she’s very rarely running out of Mana, which is good. Overhealing is a bitch though, I’m using down-ranked Healing wave much more often and still getting outsize overhealing percentages.

Totem handling is still not good enough, Flowersz is better at spotting after they disappear, but not at pre-emptively refreshing them, time for a dig around to see what add-ons might exist to give me a better visual indication.

I didn’t bring enough Mana Pots along, after one of my many deaths on trash one of the DPS offered me a Mana Pot in trade, at first I couldn’t figure out why. Later I realized it meant the trash pulls could get started quicker without everyone waiting for me. After that I started chugging a Mana Pot immediately after being rezzed, but that meant I hadn’t brought enough and had to resort to using miscellaneous Fel Potions instead.

Grinding time for me now.

Sue, overweight
my long-long time girlfriend, stomach
and, though I say so myself, pretty damn fantastic person, got her first class honors degree on Monday from the Open University. Cool or what!

How could I possibly not post this on my blog?

Munqui Ideas

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:38 pm

So I was looking at the Munqui Tribe forums and Lewton had posted a small wish list for Blizzard. His main gripe was with the patheticly short bans players get for swearing in chat and spamming trade.

But he also said he’d like:

"Fun Guild objectives ? being able to work together as a guild to earn
gold in order to build an HQ (which would be like a chill out instance
for members of that guild), order and then furnishing it with really great
stuff like a juke box, link vending machine, allergy robotic toys, guild pets,
art, guild master statue and other cool furniture."

I quite like the idea of a guild master statue as long as we can throw darts at it 🙂

Anyway, I think he’s got something here – I’d like to add the possibility of Guild Achievements that would give buffs to all the guild members for a day or so. It would tie together the recent zone-wide buffs we saw in the Summer Fire Festival and the new Achievements that are coming in the next expansion. So it would work like: any level appropriate party with more than 80% guild members (ie. 4 of 5 in a party) would earn a guild buff on clearing Deadmines for the first time. 4 of 5 means you can have a character (guild or not) who has cleared it before in the party without loosing the reward. Of course NO boosting! You could maybe scale the buff so a really low level party would give a bigger buff. Anyway you get the idea.

This would help make guilds a real part of the game rather than a social offshoot.

Idle thinking.

Goodness gracious me

Exulted with the Aldor Grind

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 7:31 am

Flowersz spent last weekend doing her dailies, asthma this is now a lot easier than last time I tried this, I guess it’s because now she’s dressed in some Kara epics so she has more spellpower available. Anyway she’s now spent all the cash she’s earned and quite a bit more) getting to exulted with the Aldor. I can’t exactly say why I’ve done this, but now it’s done there won’t be any unknown holes in her purse. For what it’s worth it cost Flowersz a little under 1 gold for every 25 reputation or about 800 gold to get from Revered to Exulted, the same as the cost of an epic.

So that’s no dungeon runs again this weekend. Also I’ve discovered that the price of the “Treads of the Life Step” are not 33 badges, but 75! So that means she’s only halfway to getting these epic boots.

I can’t decide whether my plan for the near future should be to earn money to buy enchants, or earn money to by an epic flying mount. The mount will probably take me around 3 real-life months, enchants for everything will probably take quite a bit less than that. Given that I won’t be able to use a flying mount in the early stages of the forthcoming expansion I think I’ll concentrate on enchants, they’ll give me incremental boosts rather than nothing now and a bit boost later. I’m a “Marshamallow now” kinda guy.

On Sunday, the Munqui heavy mob managed to get together an impromptu Zul’Alaman run together, and from the initial reports before I logged out they were doing fairly well. Woo!

Kara run again tonight. If all goes well Flowersz will be seeing Illhoof for the first time.

On a much more personal note I topped up our van with petrol instead of diesel yesterday so that’s the van out of action and a fair bit of real world money to get the tank emptied! At least I noticed before turning the engine on. That put quite a damper on the day :(. Fortunately I don’t usually stay depressed for longer than a day.

Short term gear plan.

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:50 pm

Right, malady so here’s my short term plan…..

Dungeons:

  • Shadow Labyrinth – for the first Kara Key Fragment (and the Auchenai boots quest)
  • Black Morass – for the Keepers Ring of Piety quest, shop scarab of the infinite cycle
  • Heroic Slave Pens – for Wavefury Boots (although the badge boots are reputed to be the best for some time)
  • Heroic Ramparts – for OceanSong Kilt

And depending on whether I get the Wavefury Boots, ampoule and/or if I get 33 badges Treads of the Lifepath. I think I’m up to around 27 badges at the moment, so only three/four more bosses or 1 more lucky run! So perhaps I should be looking at Heroic Ramparts for the kilt.

Gaming Headsets

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:38 pm

The other day I thought it would be nice to buy a wireless gaming headset. So I thought, viagra dosage “I’ll get a stereo bluetooth headset”, look then I can listen to the raid leader, game music, and chat all at the same time. And what’s more I’d get to listen to music on my phone when I want to.

So I popped over to John Lewis to buy a Bluetrek ST1 advertised as “headset and dongle” on the JL website. It was £45 in John Lewis’, and £30 on the web, but I thought the extra £15 was fair enough for an extra dongle and supporting an employee owned store. Actually, it turns out, the one in John Lewis’ doesn’t come with a dongle.

It’s quite nice, not too bulky and pretty decent sound. BUT you can’t listen to stereo and use the microphone at the same time! Apparently there aren’t any headsets out there that will do this! They all switch to mono if you want to talk – and you have to press a button to do even that! It can’t be beyond the wit of man to create a headset that will work as a stereo headphones (A2DP) and simultaneously work as a normal hands free headset – all they have to do is connect on both profiles and mute the sound from the headset profile for heavens sake!

Anyway I couldn’t get the mic volume high enough to register in windows, so back it went with the official reason being that there was no dongle included.

Since I’ve returned it it has occurred to me that I can get what I want by buying a stereo headset to listen to the game sound and clip a really really cheap normal phone headset to my lapel to use as a microphone. True I’d end up with 2 separate bluetooth devices connected at the same time rather than just one, but it would at least work. I may yet do this.

Change of Tack.

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 8:40 am

So Flowersz was subbed in to help out on a last boss fight, resuscitator Opera, thumb in the guild Kara run last night.

It’s different dynamic from being in a run from the start. The most obvious thing on joining is that the existing healers have already had time to mesh and synergise their playing, viagra 40mg work out who’s the glass cannon, how much damage the tanks can take before emergency measures need taking, all that kind of thing. Suddenly the group has to re-adjust, twice, once for the player that’s left, and again for the new player (moi).

Added to the new dynamic is that I’m “ramping-up” while, last night at least, some of the others are starting to tire making adapting to change that little bit harder.

Still we managed to down Romulo and Julianne in Opera. After a couple of wipes – one of which happened when somehow we pulled the audience!

The highlight of the evening for me was “topping” the healing in this fight! Clearly a case of still being fresh.

The other highlight was actually using “Cure Poison” (8 times successfully), a new addition to my repertoire – lest I get carried away with myself I must remember that once again I did NOT use a single Purge on Julianne!

After the fight once again I argued with the loot-master! If I keep this up they’re so gonna kick me! My thinking was that I’d only been there for a small part of the evening and didn’t really deserve anything. As it happens I lost the roll so I’m happy even if the leader wasn’t.

I think next time I see this event I’m going to drop a Fire Elemental in phase 1 or 2 of the fight, when we’re fighting the star crossed lovers individually, phase 3 is no good because damage needs careful coordinating.

So that was the raid.

.

.

.

I’ve also spent a little time looking at what Rest Shaman loot drops in early parts of Kara, I’ve never bothered doing this before because, well, you can’t influence what drops so why bother? That and the bad PuGs I’ve been in always seem to be signaled by some-one putting “dibs” on loot from the last boss (which have never once actually been dropped).

Anyway, back to the loot. There is a fair bit of sweet loot that’s available in Kara, but not enough to make a complete set. So there’s only so far I can improve my gear just by running Kara again and again, for that Flowersz has got to run some heroics. Which she’s not done! I’ve not run a single heroic! In fact I’ve not seen the inside of about half of the instances in Outland at all! I need to create a gear “plan” so I can upgrade some of the really rubbish pieces of  Flowersz gear, she’s still running with some Auction House greens!

That’s too many exclamation marks for one paragraph, but you get my drift.

So that’s the plan for the next week – prepare a gear plan.
