Blog roundup

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 3:20 pm

I’ve got a few posts marked in my reader because I think they’re worthy of linking, visit this site mostly because they seem to reflect my feelings (or not), dentist far better presented than I could possibly manage.

  • WowGrrl’s The Entertainment Of A FailPUG Adventure In Blood Furnace which presents a paradigm shift in viewing PuGs, as Entertainment.
  • Then we have The Greedy Goblin’s view on making gold from being a healer, Gevlon is always entertaining though, to be honest, I hardly ever agree with him. His ideas are “interesting” and well presented, the only disagreements I have are almost always visceral – I follow my heart not my head.
  • WTFSpagetti’s one-stop post on being a freshly dinged level 80 resto shaman, a good simple read if you’ve just gone dual spec.
  • And finally for anyone who’s feeling left behind in raiding, watching all of those Uldar reports popping up on their readers, here’s a brief post from a long time player who’s only just getting into Naxx – on Leafy’s blog!

Dear Diary

Hilary Fflowers Diary

Dear Diary, angina I think that’s how you are supposed to start a diary isn’t it?

Now I’ve left home I thought I’d keep a diary, prescription so, you know, I can share it with my great grandchildren when I’m old and retired.

I’ve arrived safely at Azuremyst Isle and have signed up for warrior training. I’m looking forwards to it, I really think it will suit me even though I’m much smaller than all these Draenei. So far it doesn’t seem to matter, they’re gentle giants, and TBH I’m not at all gentle.

Flowersz, our shamanka friend, has sent me a pair of Draenei tangas. I know she thinks I’m wierd (my mum said so in her last letter), but I’m not. I was given a critical mission when I was passing through Stormwind on my way here.  Just between me and you dear diary, I think Flowersz is seriously HOT, and I’m kinda glad they weren’t her undies, it wouldn’t’ve felt right when I’ve completed my mission and have to give them up.

I’m gonna have to write a letter to Flowerz (the druid) now for a pair of Night Elf boyshorts, that”ll be hard, I barely know her, she’s a bit intimidating.

GTG, or I’ll be late for role-call.

P.S. How come all my family’s friends are called flowers?

Is this the end of the world as we know it?

Sorry, site not a deep post discussing the dystopian future of planet earth. Not even a post about players (or at least bloggers) leaving the world of warcraft, mind instead this:

wowscrnshot_042809_200506

its a little seen part of the Obsidium Sanctum found using “Far Sight” a spell I’d completely forgotten I had, and only use slightly more frequently (once) than “Sentry Totem” (never) and “Tranquil Air Totem” (which apparently went missing without anyone noticing in 3.0.2).

I’ll be using Far Sight more often in raid downtimes just in case I can find anything slightly more interesting than the edge of the world.

Damn meters

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 7:16 am

Last night I uploaded the logs from Nax to WWS and went to bed happy that the Flowersz was doing more than very well on the healing meters.

Woke up this morning remembering that WWS has recently (or perhaps even longer than that) become a pile of crap as far as measuring Healing Stream Totem’s effect.

ah well.

Ahh well, that didn’t last long

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 10:14 pm

[quite a lot of this post is made up]

Got promoted to a guild officer last night and by coincidence also got invited to a Naxx “finisher”.

I don’t suppose I’ll be an officer (provisional, medicine junior) for too much longer, order especially if I keep to my current track record (2 hours long).

I suppose accusing the RL of wetting his knickers when he got Frost Blasted at Kel’Thuzad wasn’t one of my better quips. “Keep me alive at all costs” I think was the phrase.

Yeah, I know he was calling out most of the Frost Blasts, but, well, there was a faint air of desperation there, really there was.

Anyway it got translated inside my head into “Please, please, don’t let me die” which is, I think you’ll agree, dangerously close to “heal me!“.

Fortunately for him the fingers work faster than the brain and he was still standing at the end 🙂

Less fortunately for me my typing fingers also work faster than my brain and I made the knickers comment 😮 .

I let you know if I still have a guild tomorrow.

P.S. Raiding without a ret pally sucks. I’m refusing to go anywhere near Uldar without one, not that anyone has offered, but still, I’m NOT going without one.

Strange Guilds

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:26 pm

Thox posted to plusheal asking for a healer on Darkspear. So I looked him up a few weeks ago, ailment particularly his guild. If memory serves me right there were no healers at all!

Now when I look  out of 21 toons at level 80 there are only 2 healers. 2 healers out of 21 toons seems low. The munquis have 20 out of 95, effectively twice as many.

Anyway, you never know, if I’m having a very quiet night (pretty rare) I may ping him and see if his guild need a healer for a run. Get me some real lovin’! (just joking)

UI

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 11:57 am

I’ve been looking at other’s UI’s and they’re pretty clean, hygiene while mine is still pretty cluttered.

ES ‘n’ H (excellent value for money blog) put up an article about Spring Cleaning your UI, practitioner prompting me yet again to think about mine. With the mystical advent of Dual Specs I’ve realized a few things.

1. I really don’t need 5 Bartender bars on display at the same time! At least some of then could be auto hidden.

2. I know where all my totems are (Bar 2), I never ever ever click on the buttons, and I don’t recognise the icons anyway!  Bar 3 likewise. Bar4 is full of crap. Bar 5 (on the side) is only being used to assign hotkeys to Mana Spring etc. So that’s back to 1 bar, and again I NEVER click so that could go too! Blimey!

3. Dual Specs means I no longer need to have all those offensive abilities on my Bar1 (except for maybe Loatheb) , if I’m going offensive I’ll be elemental and using a different bar.

We’ll see where this new found enthusiasm goes.

blah blah bleurg wriagh

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 11:44 am

Random blah time.

Tried a couple of heroics yesterday, ambulance Violet Hold and Caverns of Time – Culling of Stratholme.

We wiped on VH and gave up. I was particularly upset because Flowersz was certainly in part responsible though some of the wipe may have been (I think) due to a player going AFK. You see I have to take some of the blame because I was trying to use Vuhdo, visit this and, yes, it did do what it said on the tin, but my Water Shield and Earth Shield management was appalling. Earth Shield is particularly important because it gives me a buffer while Flowersz is running into range/winding up a big heal. Some of the fault with Vuhdo was mine, I still had “small” health bars from the 25 man OS, and after being used to playing with “medium-sized” bars in 5 mans I’m not as quick to notice any health deficit.

Also I’m still not used to checking the the strange Earth Shield blob, I’d much rather something positive happened when ES expired rather than the non-event of it disappearing. My insta Chain Heal macro wasn’t configured up in VuhDo either, so there was a moment of confusion just at a time when I really needed it.

So on VuhDo I need to

  • configure insta chain heal
  • get it to show threat (massively useful)
  • get it to do something more noticable on missing buffs
  • Figure out how to setup “private” tanks.
  • Only use it when there’s a big heal buffer, not when I’m the only one!

Anyway, after the wipe, rather than fight through the trash etc again we went to CoS and did a speed run. That went a lot better, though it took about 5 reloads of the UI to get Healbot back and working – unfortunately HB and Vuhdo do NOT play with each other at all! We got close to a wipe at one point, but pulled it off. I quite like CoS, it’s got a nice “no let-up” playstyle to it that reminds me of Zul’Aman runs. Even if we had wiped somewhere I think I could probably have self-ressed and got us going again in enough time to get the achievement.

I’ve ploughed through the 17 page EJ thread on Malygos and I think I’ve some ideas of the strategies involve. I’ll be making a Malygos page to summarise. Though of course it will all be theory and no practice.

Flowersz has been invited to be a (presumably junior) officer of the guild. I will be accepting on her behalf if the job’s still open/they haven’t come to their senses. My second thought on getting the whisper was “who else is up for it?” so I could maybe “Pass” in favour of them if they were (IMHO) better suited. But then I realized you don’t get to do that in real life.

If I turn out to be rubbish at it? Well, I won’t be depressed if I get demoted. Not that other’s opinions don’t matter to me, just that I know my opinions of myself are rarely in agreement with other’s. I’ll try not to cause enough drama to get /gkicked though – that really would hurt. I wonder what being an officer involves?

Vuhdo first impressions

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:22 pm

I’ve been meaning to try out the healing addon Vuhdo for a while now, see it’s been getting favourable comments. Thing is, abortion I didn’t really want to try it out on a proper raid night in case it was inadequate. Well last night we went of a 20 man Obsidium Sanctum run so I gave it a go, these raids take ages to setup so I had plenty of time to configure it.

What do I think so far, well pretty reasonable, I’ve got it looking much like Healbot though a little narrower and for plain old healing it seemed to work fine. It felt a bit laggy, there were long times when I wasn’t seeing a lot of damage, but then that could easily have been my network connection or the Druid Hots and Paladin casts simply keeping the raid topped up. To be fair there were plently of times when I was seeing damage.

My biggest problem on this run was not being able to see when my earth and water shields expired, Earth shield had a little dot icon, and there was no icon for Water shield. I’m used to healbot where the whole bar goes white when there are no shields left, a big eyecatcher.

I also couldn’t figure out how to set a private tank, but that’s just operator error. I’ll have to look through the 28 pages of posts on Plusheal, I’m sure pretty much everything is in there somewhere.

One feature I did like was the ability to group players by role (melee, ranged, healer etc), I think this may help me since melee benefit most from chain heal and having them all together will reduce my thinking time.

I’ll be playing with it a little more over the next week or so and let you know how it goes, it’s nearly a replacement for Healbot already.
