In a dilema

Dreamhost have “invited” me to a Virtual Private Server for a pretty impressive $10 off the base price of $15. Having a Dreahost PS means I can have long running processes.

The downside: you don’t actually get a lot of memory for your $5, resuscitator a mere 150MB which might be enough, unfortunately I’ve read that new environments are nothing like as performance tuned as the “shared” environments, running out of memory and giving Error 500 errors if you have too many simultaneous requests.

And there’s the nub. Most of the “ponies” site is not heavily used and would probably transfer over fine with some tweaking later. But I also run an “old maps” site that accounts for 50% of the requests, but it makes a lot (if you define lot as 36,703 tiles/½GB per day) of requests to my “tileserver” and that is likely to bomb out big style if I “upgrade”.

I can probably install a smaller quicker webserver to get this back under control but that would take time during which my site would be down almost permanently.

Ahh well, I think I’ll pass on this excellent offer. The site works well enough as it is I think, and I don’t have time to tweak it.
