meet ms pointy

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 11:34 am

I took Flowersz up against some of the target dummies in Ironforge to get a measure of her DPS

Against Heroic boss target dummy: 1.5k ish.
Against Level 80: 1.9K ish.

That’s quite a drop in DPS! But, rx she’s not got any enchants, cough is missing a meta gem, needs a belt buckle+hit gem, boots, and has the mats for an epic main hand so there’s certainly scope for improvement.

A little internet told me that 1.5k DPS should be good enough for naxx and os so I can add doing these as enhancement to my todo list then!

The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 11:36 am

As if I ever plan anything!

I had intended to PuG Fflowers the tin-can into Utgarde Keep last night for an extra special night of epic fail tanking. Well, purchase that was if I ever stopped faffing around with Flowersz the dual wielding ball of Windfury. (Tip: always have a Plan B even if it’s the same as Plan A)

I was still faffing around with my enhancement spec beating up on target dummies in Ironforge (DPS is up from 800 to well and truly over 1k if you must  know) when I got an unexpected invite to raid Ulduar. Unexpected because I hadn’t signed up, medstore the signup-list on the calendar looked like it would be called off, and I was intending to raid on Thursday.

Anyway, I went.

We wiped.

Quite a lot actually.

I enjoyed myself.

Which just goes to show, that for me at least, raiding is not about defeating content in the minimum possible time with the fewest possible errors. OK, no wipes would also have been good, but I stick to Warcraft for it’s multiplayer-ness. Group-play is about attitude, and the Munquis have plenty of that! Thursday’s raiding is probably off though (unless Plan B kicks in).

Oh, Flowersz also healed heroic VH without any deaths! And got enough emblems/badges/matchsticks to buy herself a tier helm, the one with the stylised piece of drool hanging from it.

I’m probably not going to tank UK for a couple of more days now, I’ve got to screw up the courage again and book an evening. In the meantime you’ll probably find me poking that target dummy in IF with a couple of pointy sticks.

Level 0 Diagnostic

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:15 pm

Does it annoy anyone else when they say “Run a level 0 diagnostic” on Star trek?

Huh? level 0, mind well depending on if they they count up or down this is either:
a) open the cabinet door and see that the thingy is still there.
b) take each and every single individual part out of the thingy and make sure that it is working OK, probably around 2000 individual little parts including the wires.

Either way it’s not going to be done in 3 hours, either 3 minutes or 3 days.

it amuses me to think that it’s a), so Mr La Forge is quoting hours to open a cabinet door.

The seasons are changing.

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:24 pm

I’m not keen on this time of year, help yes the changing colours of the leaves on the trees can inspire awe, find but at the same time the nights are closing in and the geese are flying south.

Anyway, it’s a time of change, and that’s what I’ve done, respecced Flowersz second talent tree to Enhancement again. I just don’t really “get” caster DPS. Of course going Enhancement isn’t without it’s issues, the biggest one being gear.

As Elemental I could reuse about half of my resto gear and replace the rest with purple/blue +hit gear. Except. I haven’t stepped foot in a single dungeon as Elemental, and I’ve not really been tempted, not even when there’s a slot like last night. So apart from making dailys a bit quicker it’s not really been a spec for me.

I’ve unpacked all of Flowersz old enhancement gear and dusted it off, and, looking at it, I’m unimpressed. A few offspec epics that I picked up from Naxx, 5 late 70’s blues and even 4 greens! Nothing is enchanted, even the gem slots are empty! Wow-Heroes ranks her enhancement gear at about 100th in the guild and not even Naxx ready!

So my plan of attack is

  • make some blue-quality gems,
  • craft a couple of  JC epics
  • buy some “cheapish” epics and blues to replace the low level stuff.
  • get a totem with those old near useless badges.
  • Up her hit rating to something more usable.
  • Find out what my DPS is to see where it stands.
  • Run some ordinary dungeons or maybe Heroic Utgarde Keep.

I won’t be bugging the guild for boosts in heroics just yet, not until I’ve remembered how to play enhancement.

My aim for this spec? To actually do some face-to-face smashing against some honest-to-god bad guys that need to learn a lesson.

Unfortunately any Badges of Conquest are going on resto gear, so “WindFury-of-Flowersz” is going to have to live off drops.

All this will have to wait a couple of days though, I’m busy, but I’m planning, oh yes I am.

Nothing like airing your dirty laundry

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 3:05 pm

okey dokey! So maybe you’re asking yourself WTF is he going on about? Or maybe you’re thinking “eww, ailment no more bad underwear jokes”. Pfah, esophagitis what do I care? I write it and you may or may not read it, ampoule you may even wonder when I’m going to get to the point? I’m still not caring.

So last night, Vent, whee! Oh yeah, except for no speaky because of epic operator fail!

There’s a teensy little switch on my headset that has a volume control and a little silver slider. The kind of little silver slider that you whang backwards and forwards and back and fore while you’re waiting for the raid to start, you know? Well, it turns out that that little decorative piece of plastic has a function, and even a label to tell you what that function is. Except all that whanging to and fro has worn the label off. The label used to say Mute.

Do you see where I’m going with this? I think I’ve said more than enough.

So anyway, no talking on Vent for me. Less so for most of the rest of the raid. Mucho fun and talking going on.

Not so mucho reading of raid chat where us poor mutes were trying to find out where to go. Annoying, but harmless in the end as we had to get out so the raid id could be properly set anyway. And besides once the raid starts we’ll be mostly listening carefully to instructions. So, annoying but that’s all.

Here’s the thing though, people chatting away having fun, I’m appreciating the quality and getting a genuine idea of how people really sound. Freaking out a bit everytime someone talks to Rumi (pronounced rummy) coz, hey, that’s me!But it’s really sociable.

When someone jams a needle in my ears! I pull the headphones away from my ears until it stops and it’s all back to normal, some laughter, some chatter a bit of bantering.

Anyway, it happens a few more times, and my ears are starting to bleed!

It sounds fairly innocuous, and it was. It was just high spirits. I know I should have said something – but I didn’t.

Didn’t stop my ears from bleeding either.

It hurt, like standing by a jack-hammer hurts!

I know what I should have done, but I took the fuckwit option.

OK, more about my heart is finally getting back into a more normal lub-dub rythm so I though I’d chuck out a random post based entirely on ignorance and misunderstanding. That’s why you come here, skincare right?

The very few times I’ve joined Looking For Group or even Trade I’m always impressed by the number of requests along the lines of:

Group ready for <random heroic> just need Tank and Healer. LolWOT! Call that a group?

Fractionally more commonly they’re looking for just a healer or tank.

Blizz have tried to do something about the tank shortage, and they may have succeeded. Except I think all the tanks have gone and guilded-up and understandably don’t want the excessive hassle of dealing with random PuGs.

Healers seem to be in about as short a supply as tanks within LFG, but in *my* guild they seem slightly more scarce.

I ‘m expecting Blizz to address the healer shortage in Cataclysm, at least as far as raiding goes, by basically buffing the wazoo out of healers until their eyes glow yellow in the dark.

I’m predicting that they’ll make it so you only need 2 (instead of 3) for a 10 man and 5 (instead of 7) in a 25 man. It’s an easy fix. They might even address 5 mans so it’s easier to reuse your DPS gear perhaps by giving healers a talent that converts hit/strength/agility/Attack power into Spellpower/mp5. This wouldn’t be anything new, they ditched + heal and converted it into +SP and I think enhancement shaman already have a talent to convert AP into mana.

Of course this all depends on whether Blizz actually think that there’s a healer shortage.

So there you, a random post based on ignorance and stupidity about something I have barely any knowledge. Beats thinking don’t it!

no title

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 7:22 am

I can’t think of a meaningful title, store sorry.

Last night….

A member of our guild has set up a Ventrilo server, and I must say the sound quality is really pretty good. Last night was the first time we had used it.

Unfortunately because of an ID 10 T error my mic wasn’t working so I was unable to talk and had to use Raid Chat as usual. Bummer.

That’s pretty much all I’m going to say on that.

Anyway, that’s all really pretty insignificant, what is significant was that I went totally Drama Queen and threw a strop just like a 5 year old! Not quite rolling on the ground. But I did quit only a short while after the raid got going. Full on. Shut down Wow, throw my headphones to the floor, and stomp away from the computer.

I owe 9 people an big apology for fucking up their evening. A proper one, ideally without any swearing.

I know some other players left the raid, hopefully for better reasons than me, but that is not an excuse for how I acted.

Later on in Guild Chat someone said “remember it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun“.

True words, and with a surprisingly deep meaning. I shall be thinking on it.

I don’t know why this page was so hard to find!

So much clearer than “You should also click on the Setup button and configure all of the different options that control Ventrilo. This is very important …” Or a page detailing everything you could possibly want to configure, syphilis even down to icons. Actually I’m guessing there, I’ve not read the page, I just wanted the idiots guide.

Another weekend some more fun

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 11:55 am

Weekends are shaping up to be the level 1 munqui raids, here hogger this weekend. Unfortunately there weren’t enough of us to properly take him on, drug but with a level 80 priest healing and tanking (but NOT hitting) we had a shed-load of fun.

We did get our kill stolen occasionally by passing “helpful” players. But hey, would you know not to interfere if you’d newly dinged level 10 for the first time and saw a bunch of level 1’s getting the crap beaten out of them by hogger? They might even have needed the kill for all we knew.

I’ve realized that any newly rolled level 1 is anonymous and quite free to pass out insults all (s)he likes. I just need to remember not to give out hints like, “my warlock can come and make summoning portals if you need one.”. (There just aren’t many warlocks in the guild) Doh! Slaps head.

Actually last night was pretty full of that kind of fail, right down to complaining in the Trade Cannel that I couldn’t seem to see the Trade Channel!

After that it was off to heal one of our newly (ish) minted level 80 warriors in heroic Totc. With a long wait to find a tank. Apparently this was after an even longer wait for a healer! It went OKish, a wipe on the Black Knight, but that seems fairly standard, at least in my groups 😉 ! I even got an upgrade, mail waist with socket! I let the mage have the kris dagger, no point in being greedy!

I’ve re-gemmed for haste deciding to lose the pathetic intellect bonus on Flowersz’ current legs in favour of two epic haste gems. You know, I think it might actually be helping in 5 mans. Mana is still not a problem, but then 5man heroics are different from raiding. We’ll see how it goes tonight, part 2 of my first ever Munqui Ulduar raid.

I’ve been boning up on the Ulduar encounters over at Earth Shields And Hots. It’s a shame they never quite finished the series, but then our chances of getting past the Yoggmeister are probably pretty low.

In these notes Aluriel often says: so don’t be that guy, what do you think? Will I be that guy. Yeah, I though so!

I’ll let you know how gloomy I’m feeling tomorrow. <laughs>

I’ve bought a complete set of Cobalt armour for Fflowers, it looks like a passable tanking set for a very reasonable cost! Just a few UI changes and he should be ready to be a tiny tin-can of taunt!

Ulduar 10

Filed under: World of Warcraft — Andrew.Rowbottom @ 12:28 pm

Flowersz first visit to Ulduar 10 man. She’s been in with 25 players as a cross-guild invite with another guild, discount but this time it was with the Munqui Tribe.

It went fairly well, I was propping up the meters with a little over 20% healing but we didn’t have many problems (at first anyway).

The deaths started when we left the first set of bosses, one of the wipes was probably due to Flowersz body pulling the boss while we were still on trash. A tank said it could have been her, but I don’t think so. I was in the right area and running around looking for the other tank so it’s not unlikely that I just ran too close to a boss I didn’t even know was in the zone.

After that things started going downhill for me, a death followed by a battle rezz followed quite quickly by death to a “void zone” (or whatever) where my body is quite definitely lying outside the zone (I’ve screenies to prove it). Maybe a lag effect?

Another death followed by a reincarnate rapidly followed by another death. I’m gonna stop rezzing in combat, there’s too much AOE flying around in instances for reincarnate to be particularly useful except as wipe recovery, and even then Blizz have put teleports in all over the place so corpse runs are nothing like as long. I did the BRD corpse run once!

More deaths, a trash pull compounded with a patrol.

And on the last boss, Hodir, I carefully ran to the little white circle on the ground and died to Frost Freeze (or somesuch). Turns out that I ran to the wrong type of circle (not the little white ones or the little blue ones, but the big blue ones)! I got it mostly right the next attempt.

I was pretty down by the end of the evening, if I never hear “Battle rezz for Flow” ever again it will be too soon!

I’ve managed to rationalize most of my gloom away this morning though, pretty much all of my really bad play was on the last bosses. My story is that I’ve never seen them before and I hadn’t “researched” them because I didn’t expect to see them on that run. And I’m sticking to that!

Still a bit gloomy though. Just a phase. Don’t worry about it.

Oh and

Total personal death count: 10! Against only 4 wipes!

Gear is still a minor issue, minor because it will sort itself in time and because we’ve got some cool healers that can easily take up 10-15% slack but could have problems dual healing (though I bet they could do it if pushed).

I had a look and I’ve got a big fat zero yellow gem slots on my gear for haste gems, so I’m going to have to go for combined haste+intellect or mp5+haste gems. Mp5 is still a non-issue, even on the longer fights so I may even sacrifice a gem bonus for haste.

The first part of the run was with another Resto-Shaman so I can compare healing, frankly it could hardly be more different! I’ll be doing a deeper comparison when I get home and have access to a log analyser.

But here’s some details.

                       A* | F
% %ovh | % %overheal
Lesser Healing Wave: 26.9  49.2 | 5.9 52.4
Riptide: 23.7 64.1 | 18.1 55.4
Chain heal: 17.6 53.3 | 30.4 56.2
Earth Shield: 16.3 24.3 | 15.3 26.1
Ancestral Awakening: 9 40.6 | 6.8 44.0
Earthiving: 4.4 67.8 | 5.5 58.6
Healing Wave: 1.9 23.1 | 16.2 65.5
Glyph of Healing Wave 0 0 | 1.9 81

So, there you have it, A* barely used Healing Wave while it was 3rd, almost 2nd on my spells. Also Chain heal was my primary spell and and for A* it was a solid 3rd, only just above the passive Earth Shield.

OK, A* was tank healing while I was on raid, but it makes me think though.

I would have expected a tank healer to go for Healing Wave.

I can see that Glyph of Healing wave is a measly 2% of my healing. There must be a better one lying around.
